Tourist Spots
Naini Lake
The nucleus of Nainital’s uncomparable beauty is beautiful lake. In the day, mirrored in its waters stand seven proud hills, dotted with pretty cottages and villas. More beautiful than this however is the lake at night when the myriads of bulbs from the hill sides and quite a large number hanging near the lake’s edge stab their magic light into its waters. The lake offers the holiday makers ample opportunity for yachting, boating or paddling the boat. Boating rates in conventional rowing boats ranges from Rs. 80/- to Rs. 120/- from one end of lake to another end. Paddling boats are available on hourly rate from Rs. 80/- to Rs. 120/- depending on type of paddle boat.

Nainital Flats
A wide level ground is known as Flats, one can see players playing Football, Cricket, Basket Ball at Flats. There is a fountain, band stand, a statue of Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant near Flats, One vehicle parking & tibbetan market is also located near Flats. Nainital excursions cabs are available from here. Boats play in the lake for the visitors and a boat ride is extremely enjoyable.

At the northern side of the lake there is a place of rendezvous for people from all walks of life. Here evenings are heavily crowded. There is a statue of Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant and a beautiful fountain. There is a band stand. The Flats has playing ground used for sports games and cultural activities during festivals. There is Chat Bazar, Bhotia Market in the flats. In Bhotia Market vendors sell their fancy items. There is Mosque, Gurudwara and Naina Devi temple in flatts. Capitol cinema and Rink theatre which is used for roller skating are also situated in Flatts. A portion of the flatts is used for car parking. New club, Boat House Club, Masonic Hall are in the periphery of the flatts for recreation.

The Mall
On one of side of lake is the Mall road now it is known as Govind Ballabh Pant Marg. Number of hotels, food joints, shops, banks and other business concerns are here. In May & June vehicular traffic is not allowed on Mall road in evening hours to facilitate tourists. This road is the main link joining Mallital and Tallital. On the other side of the lake lies the Thandi Road. It is comparatively less busy and have Pashan devi temple. Entry of Vehicles is prohibited on Thandi Road.


Naina Devi Temple

Nainital name has been originated from Naina Devi and Naina Devi temple is situated right on Naini Lake near flats, It is said that eye of goddes Sati(Wife of Lord Shiva) fell here at Nainital thus lake is known as Naini Lake. Tibbetan Shopping market is situated besides Naina Devi Temple. The Naina Devi Temple was destroyed by the landslip of 1880 and later rebuilt. It is located on the northern shore of Naini Lake at Mallital. This temple is devoted to Maa Naina Devi represented by two Netras or eyes. Idol of Mata Kali and Lord Ganesha flanks Naina Devi.

St. John Church
The church of St. John was established in 1844 and is located on the north end of town (Mallital), about half a mile north-west of the Naina Devi temple. The church was so named by Daniel Wilson, the Bishop of Calcutta, who, after falling ill during a visit to Nainital in 1844 to lay the foundation of the church, was obliged to sleep in an unfinished house on the edge of the forest. A brass plaque on the altar is inscribed with names of the victims of the Landslip of 1880.

Raj Bhavan
Governor’s House also known as Raj Bhavan and formerly, Government House was built in 1899 and designed in the Victorian Gothic domestic style by the architect F.W. Stevens. Originally built as the summer residence of the governor of the North West Province, it later became the summer residence for the Lieutenant Governor of the United Provinces. In present time Raj Bhavan is the official guest house for the governor of Uttarakhand and for visiting state guests. The complex consists of a two-storied mansion with 113 rooms, a large garden, a swimming pool, and golf links. One have to take permission for visiting Raj Bhavan.

Naina Peak or China Peak
Naina Peak also known as China or Cheena Peak. It is the highest peak in the town, with an altitude of 2,615 m (8,579 ft) and at a short distance of 6 km from the north end of the town (Mallital). One can hire Pony or Horses to visit this peak either from Snow view or from Mallital. One can have a majestic view of snow clad peaks of Himalayas from Bandar Punch in west to Api and Nari peaks of Nepal in the east, a full Himalayan range in one side and a birds eye view of the lake city of Nainital.

Tiffin Top
Tiffin Top also known as Dorothy's Seat (Tiffin = light meal eaten during the day). This terraced hill top (2,292 m (7,520 ft)) on Ayarpatta hill is a 4 km trek from the centre of the town and provides a nice view. Dorothy's Seat is a stonework picnic spot on Tiffin Top built in memory of an English artist, Dorothy Kellet, by her husband and admirers after her death in a air crash. The road to this picnic spot crawls along the rugged hill side. Tiffin Top affords an excellent view of the Himalayas as well as the neighboring country side. One can cover Tiffin Top as well as Lands end at one stretch as both spots are side by side.

Lands End
One can have an excellent View Of Khurpatal From Lands End. Its altitude is 2118 mts. & it is located at shrt distance of 4 Kms from the town. The best thing about this spot is that one does not have to climb much and as the name suggests one feels on reaching the area that the end of the land has really come. To go to Lands end one can go to Barapathar on a vehicle and then walk about one Km. up to the spot.

Aerial Ropeway
It is one of the main attractions of Nainital. This ropeway connects Snow-View Point (at 2270 Mts.) with Nainital near flats. Aerial ropeway starts at Mallital , there are two trolleys to carry passengers. It takes approx. 151.7 seconds to cover one way journey by trolley. Charges for cable car is Rs. 100 per person, Rs. 60 for child. Charges are for stay for one hour at the point. Timings are 10.00a.m. to 5.00p.m.

Nainital Zoo
It is a must see place for all the nature lovers and those interested in wildlife. But to enjoy all this one has to trek a distance of 1 Km from bus stand .This is a high altitude zoo situated at 2100 meters in a vast open area. This zoo is having variety of animals, namely, Himalayan black bear, Monkeys, Siberian Tiger, Leopard, Wolf, Palm civet cat, Rose ringed Parakeet, Silver Pheasants, Hill Fox, Ghoral, Sambhar and Barking Deer. It remains open for tourists throughout the year except when it is closed on the occasions of Holi, Diwali, and all national holidays in addition to the weekly off on Monday.

Kilbury is located at an altitude of 2194 mts. and at a distance of 10 Kms. from the town. One can go there by motorable road. There is a forest rest house for night stay. Kilbury is an ideal spot for those who loves peace and want to enjoy their holifdays in tranquility.

One of the important triangular point to go to Kilbury - Sigri Camp, Tiffin Top, Khurpa Tal - Jim Corbett National Park Route. Ponies and horses can be hired from here to climb to the nearby spots.

Hanumangarhi (Hanuman Garh)
It is located at an altitude 1,951 m at a distance 3.5 km from the Tallital (South End) bus stop. This temple is devotd to Lord Hanuman ji. Hanuman Garhi is also famous for its magnificient views of the setting sun. One can go to Hanuman Garhi by taxi, bus or even on foot from Nainital. It has a temple complex presiding deity being Lord Hanuman besides Ram and Shiva. At the instance of Neem Karoli Baba around 1950 these temples were built. On the other side of the hill there is Shitala Devi temple and Ashram of Lila Sah Bapu.

Snow View
It is the most easily accessible hill top, height 2270 mts. and at a distance of 2.5 Km from the town. Its at the top of Sher-ka-danda Ridge (north by north-east of the town centre), is easily reachable by cable car. This peak is also connected by motor able road. Snow view as the name suggests offers an indescribably beautiful and breath taking picture of the glittering snows of Himalyas. It has a temple. Tea, snacks, Photographers are available at this place. On a clear day, it offers spectacular views of the snowbound high Himalaya, including Nanda Devi, Trisul and Nanda Kot. ARIES (State Observatory)
The 50-year old State Observatory at Nainital was rebuilt in 2004 as ARIES, the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational-Sciences, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Observatory, which had come into existence in Varanasi in 1954, was moved the following year to Nainital, under its more transparent skies. In 1961 it was moved once again to its present location—Manora Peak (1,951 m (6,401 ft)) —a few km south of the Nainital town. ARIES's main objective is to provide national optical observing facilities for research in astronomy, astrophysics, and the atmospheric sciences.
